Nothing has finally launched a new OS 3.0, alongside the Nothing Ear Open. During the launch, the company revealed that OS 3.0 would feature several new AI features, a new Nothing Gallery app and several customisation features. The AI Smart Drawer mimics the iPhone-like app library. Previously, CEO Carl Pei hinted at the Nothing OS 3.0 release date, and now it’s confirmed that the open beta will be available in early October, with the stable release rolling out by the end of December 2024. Let’s look at the list of features coming for the new Nothing OS 3.0.
Nothing’s built-in gallery: The built-in gallery app on Nothing OS now integrates smoothly with the camera app, improving performance by about 1.4 seconds compared to the previous setup. Additionally, the camera app processes HDR and portrait effects around 25 per cent faster.
New UI: The update introduces new UI elements, including font changes, Dot Matrix, and Transparency effects. You’ll notice fresh Dot Animations in fingerprint recognition and charging indicators. The N-dot font is now paired with a Sans Serif font for improved readability. The Dot Matrix UI now extends to apps like the Weather app, featuring animated weather icons. The brand has also hinted at new transparent software elements designed to enhance data visualisation.
App drawer: Nothing OS 3.0 introduces AI-powered app categorisation, placing frequently used apps at the top. This feature, called the Smart Drawer, functions similarly to the iOS app library and can be enabled as an option. The traditional app drawer remains the default, where you can also pin your favourite apps at the top.
Lockscreen clock and widget: Nothing OS 3.0 offers additional clock faces and widgets for the lock screen. New designs include N-Type, N-Dot styles, and a clock resembling the one used in London’s Underground stations.
Home screen widget: Nothing OS 3.0 offers over 20 built-in widgets, including a countdown widget. It also lets you share specific widgets, like the pedometer, with other Nothing OS users for a more connected experience. People can respond to shared widgets with stickers.
The Nothing OS 3.0 beta rollout is set to start in October, though details on eligible phones haven’t been confirmed yet. It’s expected that the new OS 3.0 rollout will likely start with the CMF Phone 1, followed by the Nothing Phone (2a) Plus, Nothing Phone (2a), and Nothing Phone 1. The stable version is planned for release in December.
